NAIT has introduced a new academic requirement called academic standing for students that takes effect July 1, 2017. Academic standing is a term used to denote a student’s status based on criteria for completing the credential. Academic standing procedures are established to support student success and the academic standards of NAIT. They enable NAIT to acknowledge academic excellence, establish consistent minimum standards for academic performance and progression, and ensure students are aware when their ability to continue in a program is in jeopardy.
Does this apply to me?
Academic standing applies to students who have been admitted program?through the application process (except for academic upgrading students) for Fall 2017 onwards. It does not apply to:
- students in academic upgrading,
- open studies students, or?
- students who commenced/restarted their studies before July 1, 2017. NOTE: The academic standing requirement will apply to students who started their studies before July 1, 2017 but withdrew from their program and wish to return after having been away from their studies for a calendar year or longer.
Note: All students in a degree or applied degree must have a Graduation GPA of 2.0 unless they commenced/restarted their studies prior to July 1, 2013.
How is academic standing calculated?
At the end of each term, academic standing is calculated based on your term grade point average (TGPA). There are two levels of academic standing:
You will receive good standing status with a minimum of 2.0 TGPA, calculated at the end of the term. Your official and unofficial transcript will be updated with “in good standing”.
You will receive an academic warning status if your TGPA is below 2.0. Your official and unofficial transcript will be updated with “on academic warning”.
|Credential?||TGPA Needed for Good Standing?||TGPA Needed for Academic Warning?|
|Diplomas, Certificates & Degrees||TGPA?≥ 2.0||TGPA < 2.0?|
Viewing your academic standing
Academic standing decisions will be posted at the end of each academic term. You may verify your status by checking the decision located at the bottom of your “View Grades and Academic Decisions” page for a specific term, located under the “My Academic” and “Grades & Transcripts” tabs through your MyNAIT portal. Academic decisions will also appear on your official and unofficial transcript. An unofficial copy can be obtained through your MyNAIT portal.
Where can I go for help?
If your academic standing is at risk, we strongly encourage you to contact your program leadership for advice on ways to enhance your academic performance and to develop a Learning Plan. A Learning Plan is a document outlining an agreed upon plan of learning between you and the program leader that is geared toward your success and completion of your program.
You may also want to consider accessing the Counselling Centre for support if emotional or relationship factors figure into your academic performance. Counselling is free and confidential. You may book an appointment in person, at 780-378-6133, or on our NAIT webpage. NAIT can also accommodate walk-ins, if you are finding yourself in crisis. Office hours are 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on weekdays. After hours, please call the Distress Line at 780-482-HELP (4357) or, if the risk of harm is immediate, go to your nearest emergency room. Please note that reaching out to the Counselling Centre does not replace the need for a Learning Plan. It can however, assist in your being successful with your Learning Plan.
